CASTLE CHLEMOUTSI

CHLEMOUTSI

Chlemoutsi or Chloumoutsi or Clermont or Castel Tornese was the most important castle of the Princedom of Achaia. Built between 1220 and 1223 during the Frankish Reign from Geoffrey II of Villehardouin in Ilia, it protected Andravida and also its seaport, Glarentza. The Castle’s original name was Clermont, as named by its French owners. The Greeks named it Chloumoutsi as shown in the Morias Chronicle, or Chlemoutsi which is the name that reached up to our time. During the Venetian Reign it was named Castel Tornese, because the Venetians assumed that there took place the cutting of the coins of the Princedom of Achaia, the tornesel……

The castle commands a big hill 45km north from the port. About 45 minutes easy driving from the port needed to reach the castle. To explore the castle and the small new Museum you’ll need about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The castle itself and the incredible view to the Ionion sea is a good reason to be there. A combination of the castle, Ancient Elis, lunch in a local restaurant and Kourouta beach could be a perfect tour for those who already been in Olympia before.

Entrance to the castle and the Museum costs 3 euro per person, (adults only).

Working hours: Tuesday-Sunday 08.00-15.00.  Mondays closed
